A View of Greenery, from the City

A project by Dani-Lou Voigt, Kristina Pritzl and Kerstin Reilemann | May 2023 | Metavier Galerie | As part of INS BLAUE

Three perspectives on greenery. From within the city. How do city dwellers preserve nature in their memories? How does it affect them in the present, and which longings for nature do they wish to fulfil? In a collaborative project, we created three installations that invited visitors to immerse themselves in these different perspectives and actively contribute to them.

People take photographs to preserve memories. We wondered how many photographs of nature might be hidden away in the photo archives of city dwellers. These images, which often feel like small escapes from urban everyday life, became the starting point for our exhibition. The photographs came from personal archives and were gradually joined by images contributed by visitors throughout the exhibition. A lively and diverse collection emerged, reflecting our longing for nature and our connection to the green world.

Elsewhere, wishes and longings from visitors hung from the ceiling like falling threads. Together they formed a whole shower of thoughts and desires, inspired by one another and sometimes even responding to each other. A kind of rain shower conversation about bringing more nature into our cities.

To experience with our senses, we need to be present in the here and now. If we want not only to see nature, but also to smell and touch it, we have to immerse ourselves in it. Our symbolic cloud of collected natural materials created such a moment. Gathered from surrounding gardens and forests, it invited visitors to experience nature with all their senses and to be captivated by its beauty and diversity.
